Turn down the lights!

The party is almost over ladies and gentlemen! The final week of the NFL regular season is here. The Redskins travel to Philly to meet the Eagles in the finale of what has been a disappointing season to say the least! The Skins are coming off a 33-26 loss to the Vikings where they were not able to capitalize on Minnesota's starting quaterback and Pro Bowl running back going down in the 3rd quarter. The mobile Joe Webb, who the Skins definitely were not prepared for, filled in suitably throwing for 2 touchdowns and running for another in the victory. Things don't get much better this week facing an even more mobile Mike Vick and a red hot Eagles squad. The Eagles are going for a season sweep and 4th straight over the Skins. In the week six 20-13 loss, Rex Grossman was benched after throwing 4 interceptions, which ushered in the John Beck era, or error! As Biggie said "your reign on the top was short like leprechauns" as Beck started the next 3 games before eventually handing the job back over to Grossman.

And we move on to more disappointment with the beloved Washington Redskins who were one of four teams to not have a member selected to the Pro Bowl. London Fletcher who leads the NFL in tackles with 163 was once again a forgotten man in not being selected. Maybe the 5-10 record had just a little to do with him being overlooked. Lets cap it off with Ryan Torain getting a heck of a Christmas gift, being given his release by the team. The 2 rookies Roy Helu and Evan Royster seem like they will share the load for many years to come! Maybe the only bright spots on an otherwise very dark season!

How You Respond!

Week 15 of the NFL schedule falls upon us. The Skins travel to New York to face their division rivals the Giants. Lets all think back to week 1 of the season when the Skins were victorious 28-14. So much promise, so much hope of a good season. Rex went 21-34 throwing for 305 yards, spreading the ball all around. There was no quarterback controversy, no injuries and no suspensions! Fast forward to the present. After coming off of a heartbreaking 34-27 loss to the Patriots, how will the Skins respond this week? After having Brady on the ropes, him getting into a heated exchange with his offensive coordinator, they let him off the hook! Rex threw an interception inside the New England 10 yard line to seal another Skins loss. DEVASTATION!

But all is not lost. There is the role of the villain, the spoiler as it is so often referred to. They can damage the Giants playoff hopes with a win. The G-Men have to be riding high after their improbable win over the Cowboys last week. Lets bring them back down to earth. A few more wins would look good on the resume for the year. But lets not look forward to next week in what we think will be a winnable game against the Vikings. The way this season has been going, anything is bound to happen!

No Back to Back!

The Skins weren't able to get back to back wins they so desperately were hoping for, falling to the Jets 34-19. A quarter of the season remains, and looking at the schedule there may be only 1 more victory out there. They have to run the table just to finish .500! The next game is home against Brady and the Patriots. Belichick and Brady have to be licking their chops, considering the Pats franchise has never won a game in the Presidents home town! Add that to the the suspensions of Fred Davis and Trent Williams for the remainder of the season for repeat violations of the leagues substance abuse policy. I just hope it doesn't get ugly early! How riled up must Andre Carter be coming back to play against his old team. He played 5 seasons with the Redskins before going to New England. He has 9 sacks on the year and you know he's going to want to get after Rex Grossman to increase that total.

A positive note on the season is the Skins may have found themselves a running back for the forseeble future. 4th round pick Roy Helu rushed for 100 yards in consective games and has clearly been a bright spot in an otherwise dim season. Is it time to fully concentrate on the Washington Wizards? They open up Monday December 26th at home against the New Jersey Nets. Maybe John Wall, Andray Blatche, and JaVale McGee can bring some excitement to the DMV!

HIP HIP HOORRAAYY!!!

How do you stop a 6 game losing streak? Play the Seattle Seahawks! Maybe the return of Santana Moss from a broken hand played a minor roll in the victory. An emotional boost if nothing else knowing one of your team leaders on and off the field has returned to help fight the battle. The Skins pulled it out on the left coast by a score of 23-17. Rex Grossman threw for over 300 yards, and running back Helu rushed for over 100! You have got to be kidding me! Consistent performances like that may have them better than a 4-7 overall record. They might even be in the playoff chase. But as I point out again, consistency is an organizational problem.

With 5 games remaining, some brutal ones at that, they may be able to finish the season .500 or above. Next up is a home game against the 6-5 New York Jets who are fighting for a playoff spot in the AFC. You have to think they will be gunning for a win to stay in the hunt. Nothing better for the Skins to play spoiler. Expose Sanchez for the fraud many think he is, and send them back to New York sad faced! Back to back vicories are something the Skins have not enjoyed since the first 2 weeks of the season. Pathetic! But what type of expectations did the Skins have coming in to the season? They did have an uncertain QB situation which the starter wasn't announced till just before the season. But at least no one labeled them the "Dream Team"

It's that time again!!!

Time for Skins fans to really break out the "HAIL YEAH I HATE THE COWBOYS" wristbands. Never a better time to stop a 5 game losing streak than against your rivals. Does the rivalry mean less if one team is superior to the other? Well that seems to be the case. Cowboys coming off a blowout of the Bills, a team that blanked the Skins a few weeks back. Things were looking so bright in the beginning of the season, however that Giants game now seems light years in the past. Is it legit to ask will the Skins win another game this season?

Rex Grossman back at quarterback didn't give the Redskins the spark they were looking for. Flip flopping back and forth between 2 mediocre quarterbacks is not the solution. Now out of the Luck sweepstakes, do you look in the draft for a quarterback, or go the free agent veteran route? That route hasn't exactly worked out for the Skins lately. And the grumblings about Shanahans return should be put to rest! Let the man get a half decent quarterback before making such decision.

With playoff hopes dashed, and nothing to play for but pride, you better believe that is exactly what they will do! The men in that locker room won't lay down! How can you not be up for a game against a team you hate! Fight for all DC! It may be painful getting through the rest of the season, but better days will come!

Lighten the Mood!

Tragedy, sadness, drama! Seems these are the only things happening in the world recently. The Penn State child sex scandal. Smokin Joe Frazier  and Heavy D passing. The Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos being abducted in Venezuela. I thought it might be a good time to speak about some things a little more uplifting.

But the news is still depressing with the play of the Redskins. Yet another loss, 4 in a row. This time to the 49ers who surprisingly have the second best record in the NFL. But to be optimistic and look at the glass as half full, they did score HOORRRAAAYYY!!! 11 whole points! And that includes a touchdown pass from Beck as well as a 2 point conversion. However, they did release Donte Stallworth. Does it really matter when an unproductive player is let go? Productivity has been lacking from the entire organization which always leaves Skins fans looking forward to next year. But as we look forward to next week, the Skins travel to Miami to take on the Dolphins. Luckily they won't be facing a desperate team looking for their first victory of the season.

As we debate the battles that take place on the field of play each week, lets take time to salute those brave men and women who battle on a different type of field. Make Veterans Day everyday! If you see active duty or retired military personnel, just say Thank You! Thank You for putting you life on the line to secure the rights and freedoms of all Americans. From all of TheWalkons, we salute you and say Thank You!

"Making history for the wrong reason"

With National Cliche Day earlier this week, I thought I might use a few from the sports world to describe the 23-0 loss "the Redskins suffered at the hands of the Buffalo Bills". They have lost 3 straight games and definitely "laid an egg" in Toronto. Giving up what has been changed to a team record 10 sacks, along with Shanahan suffering the first shutout loss in his coaching career. "The skins couldn't even sniff the end zone". The best thing for the Redskins to do now, "take it one game at a time".

And in the next game Carlos Rogers is back in town, "comes to your house" with a surprising 49er's team. And you have to ask those cliched questions. "Who is the starting quarterback"? "Is there a QB controversy in DC"?  Was that change to John Beck permanent? "Let's not get ahead of ourselves" but 9 games remain in the season. Who do you think "starts more games under center"?

The signing of released Dallas running back Tashard Choice is to "bolster the rushing attack". But management isn't the only ones with their eyes on the Cowboys! DeAngelo Hall brings you the HAIL YEAH I HATE DALLAS wristband. TheWalkons support any cause where "a portion of the proceeds go towards a worthy cause". In this case we showing love to D.C CENTRAL KITCHEN. I'm going to have to purchase some wristbands for the other members of TheWalkons during the week of the Cowboys game. (November 20th) Cause we don't want to look ahead "just think about the next game on the schedule".

Pivotal Position!

Short and straight to the point this week people. The quarterback play I have been seeing lately in the area is dreadful! Downright       U-G-L-Y with no alibi! I'm talking the one you met at the club you thought was a dime piece only to later find out differently UGLY!

The importance of the QB in the NFL is unquestionable. Some say the most valuable position in all of team sports. They are certainly paid like it. Can't be pitched around, intentionally walked or double teamed to get the ball out of his hands. The offense flows thru the quarterback, except for your wildcat formations. That's why I'm calling you out JOHN BECK, REX GROSSMAN, AND YOU TOO JOE FLACCO!

I'm not asking you to be the leader of the team, just asking you to make a play! A positive play! Regardless of the weapons you do or do not have around you, STEP YOUR GAME UP! Cooley, Hightower, and Moss may be down, but as the quarterback you have make some sugar out of it if you know what I mean.

One of my favorite quotes from a man who was a true leader, an asset to all mankind, explains it perfectly!

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

I believe we all know who that comes from! Lets see how our signal callers handle challenge and controversy.

He can't play basketball...Top 10 list!

Since Big Thyme has the football blog covered, I'm going change lanes from grid iron talk to hardwood jargon.  Many college programs have started their first day of "Official" practice with midnight madness.  Even better, the sky blue and white are ranked first in the coaches poll. Now on the professional end, let's just say the million and billionaires continue to cat fight it out. No sweat, I'm all for a 53 game NBA season anyway. But that's not what I'm here to talk about. This time a year brings out ballers of all skills, height, and ages. Now that I've reached my mid-thirties I pacify my passion for hoops with an occasional pick-up game or two.  One thing remains constant in pick-up hoops is at some point you're going to be placed on a team with some character who's mouth proceeds his game. To help you avoid this hardwood disaster I've created a top ten list of signs "He can't play basketball."

1.  If he comes to the court wearing his entire high school varsity basketball practice uniform; and he's easily pushing 35! "He can't play" This is just a fundamental pick-up game no-no. This goes for the yahoo who sports the NBA team nearest you attire. Which includes league breakaway pants and shooting shirt.

2. If the baller dribbles 12 times before getting his shot off during the pre-game shoot around... "He can't play!" True ballers know if you can't get your shot off in 3 dribbles there's some more work needed to be done.

3. Speaking of dribbling! I know you've seen this dude. He's everywhere! You can find him at the mall, grocery stores, wedding receptions, airport terminals, elevators, public bathrooms, bus stops, and many other obscure non-basketball locations. That's right, I'm talking about you Mr. Fancy Air Basketball dribbler! Show me a coach who practices "Air Basketball Dribbling" and I'll swim the National Harbor with nothing but a headband..."He can't play!"

4. Footwear is essential for a true baller but you will find this guy at a court nearest you. I must admit I do find this type of baller amazing, because his threshold for pain is not human. I'm referring to the hooper who balls in Timberland boots, Nike boots, flip flops, and red wing boots..."He can't play!"

5. If his first shot is from half-court need I say more? "He can't play!"

6. If he tells you to clear out...when you're already on the other side of the basketball court..."He can't play!" What makes matters worse is you're the only person on his team.

7. I'm all for protective gear especially at 30 and over. Standard pick-up hooping protective apparel normally includes the following: ankle braces, knee brace, shooting sleeve, headband, wristband, goggles, and occasionally a Rip Hamilton protective mask. But if he's wearing the entire aforementioned protective gear at once..."He can't play!"

8. I know we're talking pick-up hoops but I couldn't leave my coaches hanging. This is from a coaching perspective. If you ask me why your son isn't receiving any playing time when he hasn't recorded a rebound or lay-up during the pre-game warm-up..."The father and the son can't play"

9.  If he happens to show you several pictures that includes him and Kevin Garnett, AI, Chris Webber, Rasheed Wallace and more...He's use to taking pictures thus "He can't play!"

10. If he has the NBA tattoo logo on his arm and never signed a contract; not even a 10 day contract, just for being an idiot..."He can't play!"

I can feel it!

Week 6 of the NFL season falls upon us! The 3-1 division leading Redskins are ready to bang it out at Fedex Field with the 1-4 Philadelphia Eagles. This is a big game as the Eagles have a bye next week. This is a prime opportunity to take the life and will out of a team. Cripple the bums! What type of mindset would you have going into your bye week on a 5 game losing streak? With all the commotion the "Fugazi" dream team caused this offseason, definitely not a good look!

The Skins are also trying to take control of the NFC East. A win Sunday would most likely guarantee at least a split with every team in the division. You have to believe they will take care of the Cowboys next time around. They always seem to split the season series in this rivalry. But lets not make flight and hotel reservations for Indy just yet, as I overheard one Skins fan contemplating. We are still just a quarter of the way thru the season.

12 straight games lie and wait for the Skins. A crucible, as though they were enlisted in some special-ops division of the armed forces. After Sunday, another run thru the NFC "Beast". Along with games against the Patriots, and the surprising Bills and 49ers. It has to make your hair stand on end, knowing what is ahead of us. With the cancellation of the first 2 weeks of the NBA season, it may be all we have to look forward to for quite some time!

Take it to the next level!

I love my I-Phone! I don't know what, if any Apple products you may have, but if you are so fortunate, I know you are very pleased. The Redskins and Ravens both have bye's this week. However, if they were playing, I am sure you would be able to watch on one of your I-devices. With the passing of Steve Jobs, I had to pay respect to another visionary Icon!

The innovative Jobs brought clever products to the world it seems society cannot live without! To a lesser extent in the sports world, he would be a Bill Walsh. The creative mind behind what we refer to as the west coast offense. An offense in which he won 3 Super Bowls, and is still being effectively run today.

Or a name you may not be too familiar with. Sam Barry, who establised the basic principles of the triangle offense. Tex Winter, who played for Barry at USC is given all the credit for the offense as we know it today. Phil Jackson then used it to win 11 NBA championships coaching the likes of Jordan, Bryant, and O'neal.

Something new, something different. Something so unbelievable in it's own special way it made you say wow is what Steve Jobs and these other individuals gave us. Who is going to step up in the absence of your star player? Where is the next great mind going to come from? Who will be the next Kevin Plank? The University of Maryland grad who created Under Armour and has made it into one of the fastest growing sports apparel companies in the world! Will it be one of the Walkons who takes that leap, unafraid to fail, with the next great "thing"? Only time will tell, and the clock continues to tick!

1 loss don't stop the season!

Let's not storm the streets people, let's keep DC looking beautiful! Did anyone really expect the Redskins to be the 1972 Dolphins and go undefeated? We can all dream. Although they held Dallas to no touchdowns, the skins came up a little short. There was no barbecue sauce for DeAngelo Hall to put on Romo's ribs, but you can say he got cooked on that long reception to Dez Bryant! We will not blame Rex for the strip sack, I don't want to hear anything about it's time for Beck to get a shot. Way too early for that kind of talk, still a lot of season left to be played. It's on to the Lou for the skins. Rams coming off of that beat down from them boys up I-95 hopefully it will be a repeat in the dome this week!

And speaking of beat down, what happened to the 32 combo Terps? 38-7 to Temple! Really Maryland, Really? After playing your hearts out against West Virginia, this is how you repay us! I guess this week they get back on track against Towson, we hope. Y'all boys have to do something better than beat a depleted Miami team to justify the new uni's!

And let me quickly give a shout-out to the monumental collapses of the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves. No teams of interest in the playoffs, but I will certainly enjoy October baseball! All the fans in the area have to look forward to is the return of Stephen Strasburg for the entire season and the Orioles once again finishing a season below .500!

How y'all feel! Fired up!

It will be an electric atmosphere, Jerryworld will be a'buzz Monday night! The Red Sox Yankees, Michigan Ohio State, Carolina Duke, the Hatfields and McCoys of the NFL. Whatever cliche you want to use to describe this rivalry. A knock-down, drag-out Heavyweight, or Welterweight fight, but we will get into that momentarily. When I'm sitting on my couch ready to put on the pads and run through a wall, you know it's a big deal!

Redskins VS Cowboys brings out the worst in fans and players. DeAngelo Hall looking for a rack of Romo's ribs.

Hatred: A very strong feeling of dislike. Intense animosity. Ill will. To want to stomp on the Cowboys necks repeatedly!

It's Dallas trying to stop the "Fun Bunch" from celebrating after a score. Chief Zee patrolling the sidelines looking to get into it with anyone representing the Cowboys. Arguably one of the greatest rivalries in sports!

Now if we could only get the Redskins Cowboys, so to speak in boxing. With that nonsense from Saturday night, it's about time Floyd and Manny took to the ring. The only fight fans want to see, but Floyd is too worried about legacy. Let me offer a few choice words. Don't be afraid of failure, we will all meet it in our day. Put in the "hard work, dedication" your camp is always preaching and you never know what you will get out of it!

I have said this many tmes in the past. I am done with boxing, strictly UFC. But boxing is like the female you know you should leave alone, just walk away from, but you just keep going back for all the wrong reasons!

pre-Gary

The list of African-Americans coaching Division 1 men’s college basketball today can seem endless.  The ACC alone boasts at least three African-American coaches.  This, however, was not always the case.  Being a child of the eighties, I can remember the days when my father’s love of Temple and Georgetown’s basketball programs was rooted in the fact that they were two of the most visible African –American coached teams of that era.  The careers of John Thompson and John Chaney and their accomplishments in college basketball are also very well known. A lesser known name of that era, however, was Bob Wade at the University of Maryland.
Wade, the first African-American coach in ACC basketball history, came to prominence in basketball during a his career as head coach of Baltimore's Dunbar High School where he coached ten years and produced four future NBA players.  Wade however had no college coaching experience when he took the job at Maryland.  The challenges facing Wade were endless due to the fact that College Park was still dealing with the tragic death of Len Bias, the end of the Dreisell era, and the loss of several players. But amid all of this Bob Wade did manage to coach the Terps to one appearance in the NCAA tournament during his three years in College Park.  His tenure at Maryland only lasted from 1986-1989 and opinions vary on Bob Wade’s performance as a coach during his years at Maryland, but Bob Wade will always be fondly remembered as one the few African-American college head coaches in an era when that list was very short.

May be onto something!

It's just week 1, let's not pop the bubbly, but the Redskins may be onto something. We may have to re-evaluate Rex Grossmans comments about winning the NFC East. Admit it, event the most die hard Skins fans had to do a double take on that one. A "what you talking about Willis" moment.

I'm not saying thrust him upon his royal throne and "crown him" just yet. But the Vince Young proclaimed dream team may be the only formidable foe in the division. And you see how the dream team assembled in South Beach went out last season!

The reason I see the division as wide open is, who is not onto anything! Tony Romeo as the QB of the Cowboys. No matter how much his owner has got his back, he is definitely not the answer in Dallas. Literally throwing the game away to Revis and the Jets Sunday night.

The Giants better hope they have enough healthy bodies to field a team each week, especially on the defensive side of the ball. "Lawrence Taylor is not walking thru that door".

Flexy Rexy, I won't dare call him sexy, has to play well enough each week so the fans don't call for backup Beck. See Tim Tebow in Denver.

I may not be completely on the Skins bandwagon after 1 week, but I got my bags packed, sitting by the door, ready to get aboard!

The Visually Shell Shocking Turtles

By all means I should be discussing the imperial rug that was swept from beneath the cleats of self-proclaimed Redskins starting quarterback John Beck.  But if history repeats itself my gut tells me I will revisit this topic; say around week three. The anointment of Rex Grossman as the burgundy and gold's play caller probably will have just as much staying power as Carmen Elextra's cameo on an Eastern Motors commercial. So for the time being hold tight DMV; we'll have plenty of time to leap into the Potomac.

My current sports' thought focuses on the Maryland Terrapins fashion faux pas. The Terps debut of one of 32 uniform combinations on national television may have cause Tim Gunn to roll over in his grave. Opps, Tim's still alive! We all know ugly or not fashion weaves its way from the past back into the present. Examples include Brandon Jennings with the retro Big Daddy Kane style high-top fade, the Wizards Andray Blatche rocking the headband and high socks ABA style, or LiL Wayne and his infatuation with Irene Cara's leggings.  But no one can convince me the Calvert and Crossland families envisioned their coat of arms draped on the shoulders of modern day gladiators. Honestly, this specific flag bearing combination is as fashionable as Lafayette's attire on True Blood. I've seen plenty of costumes in my lifetime but I never come across an animated jack of spades until this week. The Terps are the only squad out of 119 division one football teams that literally keep their state flag close to their chest.  Thus, I respect the state pride and celebrate their win but with respect to Humpty Dumpty let's never place that combination on the field again.

TQ

The New American Pastime, NFL Football!

"Crabcakes and football, that's what Maryland does" for all my wedding crashers out there.

Time to put on the Grown Man Pads! Enough with these NBA summer league games. Kevin Durant giving Lebron James the blues with 59 points at Hill Fieldhouse on the campus of the good Morgan State University. All attention must be turned to the NFL! With particular focus being paid to the divisional rivalry games of week 1.

By far the hardest hitting game, not just of week 1, but the entire season. Steelers at Ravens. Two perennial top 10 defenses that love to smack each other in the mouth, and might have a few choice words about your momma while they do it. Big Ben and the Steelers have had their way with Ray Lewis and the Ravens when it's all on the line. The Ravens have to "Walk that aisle" in the words of Ric Flair in order to get where they want to go, Festivus Maximus.

And lets take a drive down the I-95, where Rex Grossman is getting the start week 1 over John Beck. Shanahan has not had much QB success since Elway. I guess he's going with the veteran, 4 years difference in experience, but only 1 year age difference. Regardless of the starter, big blue is bringing a banged up defense to FedEx Field. The battering ram Brandon Jacobs is still in the backfield, but the other Manning seems ineffective without Plaxico. Lets see if the Skins D can contain the Giants, now they let go of the 100 million dollar headache. If Hightower can tote the rock like Terrell Davis did in Shanahans glory days, the Redskins may be on to something!

Lets light the grills and have a wonderful time this coming Sunday, but lets also remember those that were lost, being that this is the 10 year anniversary of 9-11!

Bigthyme, The Icon
